Environment and territorial planning operates in a complex context.
The aim of the teaching staff is to train professionals capable of managing complex interrelationships between, on the one hand, areas which are the site of and/or generate development operations, and on the other hand, these development operations which transform the areas concerned. To manage such operations requires simultaneously taking into consideration technical, territorial, and temporal aspects, particularly the effects over time, for the latter. By taking into account all these factors, the professional is able to perceive all non mechanical functions of ecosystems, geosystems and other sociosystems, in particular during their final stage
Hence, the objective of the teaching staff is to prepare the students and trainees to integrate into established and emerging professional fields, which are at the interface between the environment and territorial development. This is a sector which has a high demand for transversal assessment, particularly taking into account the expectations of sustainable development at an operational level.
To achieve these objectives the course draws on several original aspects.
- Students and trainees from diverse backgrounds
Because the students come from diverse backgrounds: planning and development, biology, sociology, law, ecology, economics, geography, geology, ethnology, political science, agronomy and engineering, this diversity enables students to address any areas where they may lack experience. As the course includes no 'refresher' lessons for those not having followed each subject area taught, it is down to students with experience in that area to train their colleagues. Cooperation and mutual help are therefore both required and expected.
- An effective and active interdisciplinarity
On the subject of prefixes of ‘disciplinary', multi = presence of; pluri = circumstancial grouping around a subject of study; inter = grouping with the intention of studying a new field or a known field with a different approach; trans = return to a transcendental science not restricted to fixed limits... The teaching staff are totally committed to interdisciplinarity. The teaching is gradually evolving from one based on 'speciality' modules where several themes are approached to 'thematic' modules where several specialities are taught. For example some assessments are based on transversal themes where the papers are corrected by four teachers from different specialist areas.
- The systemic method to link everything together
The systemic method/approach is 'THE METHOD' to tackle complexity and complex systems. It encompasses the classical Cartesian analytical approach, going further in the analysis, in particular of the objectives. Furthermore, it offers usable representation tools: complex systems. The strength of the teaching in this master's lies is its firm foundation in the developments of this method, which have been made in both the field of social sciences as in that of physico-chemistry (it's a direct link with the 4 accreditations). The teaching staff not only aim to “teach” the method, but also continuously seek to apply it to their own organisation, and to use it for the further development of the master's. Naturally, the students will be expected to put ‘THE METHOD’ into practice, particularly in their workshops. One of which involves working on a substantial project under contract with a territorial organization. Of course, they will also apply ‘THE METHOD’ to themselves, as the imperfect group that they are, during the execution of these workshops: cooperation, reciprocity, forgiveness...
